BBVA Compass Stadium was a unique project being a hybrid of private and public development between the Anschutz Entertainment Company (owner of Houston Dynamo), Icon Venue Group (developer), City of Houston, Harris County, and the Harris County Sports Authority. With multiples parties involved, there were high expectations of delivering an exceptional product while meeting strict deadlines and keeping costs low.
Civil responsibilities in this project initially included abandonment, demolition, and relocation of public infrastructure (streets and utilities) of six downtown city blocks. Primary responsibilities cut/fill dirt balance calculations, underground utility package, and construction drawings.
Due to the extensive permitting involved on a project of this caliber, phased permitting was required in order to meet the accelerated construction schedule. Because of the diligence and strong coordination of the design team, this project was successfully permitted in record time. BBVA Compass Stadium opened its doors May 12, 2012 to a Houston Dynamo win over the D.C. United. Most notably, the stadium achieved LEED® Silver Certification in December 2012, making it the first MLS stadium to receive the rating and the first newly constructed LEED® Silver sports facility in the city of Houston.
