ABOUT THE PROJECT
BBVA Compass Stadium was a unique project: a hybrid of private and public development between the Anschutz Entertainment Company (owner of Houston Dynamo), Icon Venue Group, City of Houston, Harris County, and the Harris County Sports Authority. With multiple parties involved, there were high expectations of delivering an exceptional product while meeting strict deadlines and keeping costs low.
Due to the extensive permitting involved on a project of this caliber, phased permitting was required to meet the accelerated construction schedule. This project was successfully permitted in record time because of the diligence and strong coordination of the design team. BBVA Compass Stadium opened its doors May 12, 2012, to a Houston Dynamo win over the D.C. United.
Civil responsibilities on this 340,000 SF project initially included abandonment, demolition, and relocation of public infrastructure (streets and utilities) of six downtown city blocks. Primary responsibilities included cut/fill dirt balance calculations, underground utility package, and construction drawings.
